ABOUT MARIA

Maria J. Campbell, MMus, ArtDip, BMus, CPT

Maria is from a precious cold water isle, Prince Edward Island / Epekwitk, the ancestral territory of the Mi'kmaq people. Aside from singing and dancing, some of Maria's favourite things about her time on earth include: the North Atlantic ocean, when the beat drops, neon colours, cappuccinos, and her niblings.

  • Maria weaves together her professional practices in voice, movement, contemporary art, and science to create and to empower self-exploration and effective expression in others.

Maria is endlessly curious about the many intersections of the mind & body and how these intersections, often subconsciously, affect one's disposition, performance, wellbeing, and sense of self. This understanding informs both, Maria's artwork and coaching.

  • Maria recently competed a PostGraduate Diploma at King's College London (UK) studying Psychology & Neuroscience of Mental Health, where she is currently completing a Master of Science (MSc) in the same field.

Maria has a Master of Music degree (MMus) in Vocal Performance from The University of Auckland in New Zealand, and a Post-Graduate Artist Diploma (ArtDip) from Western University in Canada, as well as a Bachelor of Music (BMus) degree, from the University of Prince Edward Island.

She is a Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) with over 10 years of experience and, in addition to Standard First Aid, is certified as both a Mental Health First Aider and Level 2 Vocal Health First Aider.

  • As a vocal coach, I aim to facilitate a creative space where you are invited to explore the edges of your artistry. We will play with vocal techniques and practice methods to facilitate the desired coordination of your instrument enabling more resonance, precision, and versatility in your voice with less effort and fatigue.

In session, we will discuss your singing goals and your experience to date (karaoke and shower concerts count), and we'll identify which areas of your voice you would like to focus on further developing.

Are you looking to gain vocal power and endurance? Release unhelpful tension? Tell stories more honestly? Create new vocal colours in tone and style? You have no idea? All good!

Customized instruction helps you explore and improve specific technical skills, expanding your stylistic capabilities. Vocal coaching gives you a more diverse set of tools on which to draw in performance and self-expression.

I have served on the faculty at Mohawk College in Hamilton as the music department's Voice Instructor where I led vocal ensemble and vocal masterclasses in contemporary and classical styles. I have also served on the faculty at Holland College in Charlottetown in the School of Performing Arts. I'm a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and the Prince Edward Island Registered Music Teachers’ Association.

  • As a movement coach, I make it easier for you to experience the many valuable, research-backed benefits of movement like stress reduction and a reduced risk of disease, as well as improved mood and energy levels.

In small group classes, I create a variety of programs suitable for different fitness levels ranging from slow, low-key movement series for mindful practice, to more upbeat, fun and energetic classes for those who want to push themselves with scalable intensity.

For 1:1 coaching, I show you how to set realistic goals and overcome barriers that have held you back in the past. In addition to offering bespoke technical instruction and encouragement, I help you develop behaviour-change strategies for habit reform and continued success long after we work together.

In addition to my independent coaching clients, I currently serve as an activity instructor with the Keep Your Head Up Foundation in Waterloo, and in the Fitness and Wellness department at the University of Prince Edward Island.

  • As a contemporary artist, I use rhymes, song, spray paint, installation, and movement to explore, challenge, and express from my lens. My work allows me to explore states of mind and body and the interconnectedness of human systems. My work examines culture and the roots of perspective.

My art has been presented at The Confederation Centre of the Arts Art Gallery, Westland Gallery in London, Ontario, Fine & Dandy Gallery in Toronto, as well as the Art In The Open festival and The Gallery @ The Guild in Prince Edward Island.
